Francis is my first porcelain doll. The inspiration to make him came from my dad’s childhood memories. In his times kids did not wear down jackets, soft socks and warm boots. And they didn’t have piles and piles of Lego blocks! Their clothes were homemade by mom or by granny. Their shoes were either of wood or of felt, and instead of socks they would wear foot wrappings. As for their haircuts, they were far from sophisticated. Especially the boys had them very simple: an almost entirely shaved head except for some bangs in the front.
They would have to walk a long way to school and a whole crowd of them would go together. Sometimes they would get lucky and get a ride in a sleigh or a cart. And after school they would have a whole lot of chores waiting for them on the farm.
They would be eagerly awaiting Christmas, though not because of any Santa. They were looking forward to delicious buns fresh from the oven, poppy-seed cakes and cheesecakes. They would pick up a Christmas tree from the forest on their way home from gathering brushwood. And they would make their own toys out of sticks and wood.
My Francis is portrayed as sad and chilled, for I find it hard to imagine such a life as happy. Still, I know well that my dad and his siblings were all very happy. What counted most was family and love:)
